How Kidney Treatment Works from Beginning to End

The Importance of Your Kidney?

The kidneys are vital organs of the body. They appear bean-shaped and have a size like the fist of an average human. The kidney’s primary function is to filter excess water and waste out of the body and make urine.

Kidney disease means damage to the kidney where it cannot filter the blood in the way it should. There is a greater risk of kidney disease if diabetes or high blood pressure. In some cases, the kidneys are so severely affected that the patients have to visit a kidney transplant hospital in Mumbai.

This article will study how kidney treatment works from start to end.

Dialysis As Kidney Treatment

Dialysis is a kidney treatment procedure in which an excessive amount of water and waste is removed from the blood when the kidney fails to function correctly.

In general cases, the kidney filters the waste, and extra fluid from the blood converts it into the urine and is excreted from our body. But when our kidney fails to do so, the dialysis method is conducted.

There are two main types of dialysis:

1. Haemodialysis

It is the most common type of dialysis that most people know. A tube is attached to a needle in the patient’s arm in the haemodialysis procedure. Blood passes through this tube and gets filtered into the external machine before passing it back to the arm along another tube.

If the patient goes by the dialysis centre, it shall be conducted three days a week with four-hour sessions each day. Patients can go for haemodialysis at home also, and they can undertake a schedule like four times a week for four hours or six days a week for eight hours overnight.

2. Peritoneal Dialysis

Under the peritoneal procedure, the abdomen’s lining is used for filtering instead of any external machine. The procedure starts with a small cut near the belly button and inserting a catheter into the peritoneal cavity.

As the blood passes through the blood vessels of the peritoneal lining, excessive fluid and wastes are drawn into the dialysis fluid. After a while, the used fluid is drained into the bag, and fresh fluid is refilled. Changing fluid takes about 30 to 40 minutes and is repeated about four times a day. Some patients prefer to get it done through a machine overnight while they are asleep.

The Bottom Line

Many patients who undergo dialysis treatment have a good quality of life and can drive, exercise, swim, and work like any other ordinary person. Few patients tend to lead their maximum life based on dialysis itself.

The treatment does not entirely cure the loss due to the damage but partially compensates for the same. If you have an acute kidney problem, visit a kidney transplant hospital in Mumbai for the best treatment. If you think you need their help now, make sure you get yourself examined at the earliest. You will not regret it. Also, make sure to stay motivated no matter what happens in your treatment.
