Authorities in Texas are investigating the possible far-right links of a gunman who opened fire at a mall in the city of Austin on Friday, leaving three people dead and several others injured.
The shooter has been identified as 28-year-old Todd Johnson, a resident of Austin. According to law enforcement officials, Johnson had a history of extremist beliefs and was associated with several far-right groups in the area.
Investigators are now examining Johnson’s online activity and social media accounts to determine the extent of his ties to extremist organizations. They are also investigating whether the shooting was an act of domestic terrorism.
The attack took place at the Barton Creek Square mall, a popular shopping destination in the heart of Austin. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing panicked shoppers running for cover.
Police responded to the scene within minutes and engaged the gunman in a firefight. Johnson was killed in the exchange, but not before he had killed three people and injured several others.
In a statement to the media, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said that the shooting appeared to be a “premeditated attack” and that the investigation was ongoing.
“We are exploring all possible motives, including the possibility that this was a hate crime or an act of domestic terrorism,” Manley said.
The incident has sparked renewed concern about the threat posed by far-right extremists in the United States. According to recent studies, far-right terrorism has been on the rise in the country, with a growing number of attacks being carried out by individuals with extremist beliefs.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
